Mesozoic Era

The Mesozoic era started 248 million years ago and ended 65 million years ago. It is also referred to as The Age of Reptiles or The Beginning of Mammals.

The climate of this era is very warm. There were no glacial conditions. Reefs are found no farther north or south than today. Seasonal temperatures contrast at high southern latitudes. It was very hot and dry.

In this era Pangea broke up. Also South America and Africa disconnected. They had been stuck together for a long time. In the Cretaceous period continents moved toward their present day positions. Lastly widespread volcanic activity occurs.

At the end of the era there was thought thought be a mass extinction. Some scientists believe this happened because a meteorites impact on the surface of the earth. This mass extinction wiped out 70% of animal and plant life including dinosaurs.
